Any vegetable matter containing a considerable amount of hemicelluloses, pentosans, pectins or other polysaccharides in addition to cellulose and not very suitable for direct feeding of animals is usable as starting material. Preferred representatives are: corn-cob and/or stalks, reeds, sunflower stalks, fallen autumn leaves. An animal food product made by the method is also disclosed.
